We have gathered here together in Roanoke, as have people in cities across the nation and world, as members of the 99%. We stand for a common goal to restore the people’s voice in our democracy and to take action locally to reverse the crisis created by corporate greed. There are people here from all different backgrounds and ideologies and we welcome all of them. With that in mind, here are some suggested guidelines on how to maintain the nonviolent, peaceful action the whole movement has committed itself to:
1. Respect other people, stuff and space. You are responsible for your own stuff.
- Practice consent: ask before touching or photographing others.
- People with animals: be considerate of others’ different comfort levels/allergies.
2. People here come from very different identities and backgrounds. Be aware and respectful.
- Being able to express one’s opinions and debate is what this movement is all about! Try to do so without resorting to name-calling, generalizations, or profanity. We are all here as members of the 99%. Debate is welcomed and encouraged among anyone present, but do make an effort to stay focused on our common goal at General Assemblies.
3. Be aware of your own aggressive tendencies/behaviors and respectfully check the behavior of others.
- Many of us are upset about the circumstances that caused our national crisis, and we have gathered to express our frustration. Do so in a productive and nonviolent manner that does not endanger yourself, your friends in the movement, or any member of the public.
- If you see anyone engaging in violent behavior, approach him or her, or alert others to it.
4. While Occupy Roanoke VA uses public space to exercise our Constitutional right to free assembly, our presence will be respectful of others who live around and use those spaces.
- Be aware that many people use the space that we will be demonstrating around. Dispose of litter in a proper manner, use designated smoking areas, and avoid defacing or damaging any property.
- When approaching people about the Occupy Roanoke movement, do so in a way that does not alienate them, but rather gets them to identify with and join us.
5. Be considerate of resources, especially for those who need it most.
- Try to recycle, use reusable water bottles, etc. With unnecessary excess and waste all around us, look at the things you have at home that are unneeded and can be donated to the occupation or to others in need.
6. Be an ally. Take care of yourselves and your friends in the struggle.
- We are all in this together. If we don’t take care of ourselves and each other, we will not be able to spread awareness and make positive changes.
7. Be respectful and aware of laws and law enforcement.
- Be mindful that members of law enforcement are also part of the 99%, and are not the ones who put us in the economic turmoil we currently face. They, too, are affected by the consequences corporate greed has had on our nation. Interact with them respectfully and know your rights.
- Do not bring illegal substances. Being shut down due to the presence of illegal substances is not conducive to the movement or anyone involved. It also allows the entire group to be painted in a certain light due to the actions of one or a few. Regardless of anyone’s personal beliefs, be mindful of the fact that others do not wish to be identified by that behavior. Remember there will be children present as well.
8. Speak in a way to communicate effectively. Don’t inhibit others from being able to speak.
- General Assemblies operate in a manner to keep discussion flowing while allowing people to express themselves. Do not shout others down while they have the floor.
